Photoshoot for the new Big Daddy Kane, Showtyme and the Lifted Crew album

Last month I was hired to shoot the album cover and promotional images for Big Daddy Kane’s upcoming release “The Las Supper.” The amazing band the Lifted Crew, and singer Showtyme collaborated with Kane on this project. The shoot was a cold day in Brooklyn. I had the task of finding a location that would fit a 55 cherry red chevy convertible. I know an artist in Red Hook that let us use his studio to shoot it. It was a great shoot. Below you will see a poster for the upcoming CD release show at the Blue Note in NYC on March 11 as well as some of my favorite images from the shoot.

Jamcruise 11 portrait project

Jamcruise 11 happened from January 7-12, 2013. This year my goal was to try and tell the story in a different way. I was inspired to shoot portraits like I have in years past. You can check those out in my Print store. With the help of Lance Eubanks and all of his crew we set up a small softbox on the pool deck, stage right,and pulled off something really great. For 3 nights in a row I shot portraits of everyone who came by and were willing to pose for a picture.. On Jamcruise there is a different theme every day, and the costumes are amazing. We shot musicians, fans, Jamcruise staff and the crew from the cruise line. Here is just a sampling of the images. Click here to see the whole gallery.

Heritage Blues Orchestra nominated for Best Blues Album Grammy of 2012

Really honored my photos were used for the new Heritage Blues Orchestra album. It has been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Blues Album of 2012. Back in April of 2012, I was lucky enough to be there behind the scenes shooting their rehearsal and in in the studio shooting portraits for the album package.

Billy Martin on the cover of the November issue of Jazz Times

Last month I drove out to New Jersey to photograph Billy Martin for the cover of Jazz Times Magazine. I am a long time fan of Billy’s band Medeski, Martin and Wood. I set up the studio in his backyard. After a couple of hours of shooting we took a break for lunch. When we returned to the outdoor studio the sun had moved. The trees in his yard were casting a beautiful shadow on the back drop. We decided to shoot more images and one of these images was the one the magazine chose. Sometimes you can not plan what is going to happen with photography. I am very happy with the results from this shoot. It was great fun spending the afternoon with Billy!

There is a small image of Bootsy Collins published on the bottom left side of the cover and a double page feature on the inside of the magazine. Jazz for Obama 2012

Last night at the Symphony Space many j.azz greats got together in support of President Obama. The pianist Aaron Goldberg has been organizing jazz benefit concerts for every presidential election since 2004 to raise money for the Democratic side. It was an honor being there shooting the concert and behind the scenes.

Rock Your Palate presented by Thrillist and Mastercard “Priceless Chicago”

On September 13 and 14th I had the great honor of being a co-host for Rock Your Palate. This was an event that Mastercard and Thrillist put onto to bring food, music and art together in a priceless way. The event took place at the Floating World Gallery in Lincoln Park. I was chosen to hang my images in the gallery. During the day at the gallery I had a studio set up where I was shooting musicians from Chicago. At night the gallery turned into a private party with an 80 person dinner with Top Chefs Giuuseppe Tentori, Dirk Flanagan and Sarah Grueneberg. A band was put together by Ricardo Gonzalez both nights. Ian Edgar was also on hand to start the evening with a video projectionist DJ set. Below you will be able to take a look at some of the images that I shot in the studio over those two days as well as a few pictures from the event. 24 hours at the Secret Garden Party in the UK

I was in the UK last week working for a new company called the First Bank of Rock. I was photographing a band called Zulu Winter. During my stay I photographed the band on the set of their video shoot and their set at the Secret Garden Party Festival. We arrived on site at noon and the band was set to perform at 2:30. Later that day on the same stage the Alabama Shakes, Little Dragon and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros were all set to perform. I had never photographed any of these bands live in concert. I really wanted to stay but my ride was leaving after the set. Even if I did stay I would have no where to keep my equipment and the weather was very rainy. The entire festival was taking place in a mud field. Everyone at the festival were wearing rubber Wellies. Seriously there were 30 thousand people wearing mud boots. I obviously did not get the memo before I arrived on the festival grounds. By the end of Zulu Winters set the stage manager agreed to let me keep my equipment on the stage and the tour manager for Zulu Winter gave me his boots since he was leaving. I was at the festival until 9 am the next morning and then caught a train back to London. What an amazing experience. I hope that you enjoy the images, because I sure did taking them!
